Behavioural Optometry and Meares-Irlen Syndrome
Low Vision
Paediatric Optometry (Children’s Vision)
CAA, Maritime and Police Examinations
I am originally from South Auckland (Papakura) and came to Wanganui in 1980, after training as an Optometrist at Auckland University. My wife and I have found Wanganui a great place to live, work and bring up our three children.
I am passionate about helping people and Optometry is a great outlet for this. The solutions we provide can have a huge impact on people’s lives. I have enjoyed taking these skills to countries where access to eyecare is limited, and have volunteered in Papua New Guinea, Nepal, Tonga and Vanuatu.
There are a number of areas within Optometry that I have a special interest in. One of these is fitting Specialised Contact Lenses, such as RGPs for Keratoconus.
Another is caring for the visual needs of people who, for various reasons have poor vision. This is called Low Vision Care, which I practice in my own clinic as well as in the Wanganui Low Vision Clinic. There is an increasing range of technology available to help people with Low Vision maximise their visual potential.
I am also interested in Behavioural Optometry. This approach to diagnosing and treating vision problems is particularly helpful to children with learning difficulties but can also be applied to any age group. People involved in Elite Sport can benefit. Behavioural Optometry uses special spectacle lenses, contact lenses, vision training exercises and coloured lenses to improve the way each person processes visual information.
I am heavily involved as a volunteer in the ministry of a local Christian Church. My other passion is for exploring the wilder parts of New Zealand. I enjoy tramping in areas I have not yet ventured as much as I enjoy revisiting a spot that is an old favourite.
